What Causes Under Eye Dark Circles?
It would appear that most of us are cursed with the common beauty challenge known as under eye dark circles. We can look like a raccoon unless we cover them up, but sometimes, this condition is not any fault of our own.
According to Dermatologist Deanne Mraz Robinson, MD, your DNA is a major contributing factor. So, if your mother and grandmother both had dark circles, then chances are you would develop them too.
The world-famous MayoClinic also lists general fatigue as another cause of raccoon eyes, along with allergies, eczema, sun exposure, hay fever, aging skin that loses collagen and volume under the eye area and pigmentation irregularities.
The dark circles under our eyes look that way, due to the display of blood vessels and the blood they are carrying. When our eye area skin is thin, which it naturally is, it makes these blood vessels more visible than on any other part of our body. These blood vessels appear blue or even red or purple, depending on our skin tone shade and the light reflecting off of the blood vessels that are sitting just below the surface of that thin-skinned area.
Vanessa Hernandez, aesthetician to the stars for L’Oreal Paris, advises using an eye cream at a young age to maintain moist, collagen-rich skin. Creams and serums fortified with hyaluronic acid and Vitamin E are excellent for keeping the eye area plump and hydrated.
How To Find an Under Eye Concealer That Matches Your Skin Tone?
Perfection is not attainable when it comes to the ideal matching under eye concealer because it’s almost impossible to find the exact shade. However, you can come pretty close, and your complexion will still appear well-balanced and attractive. Making your under eye dark circles invisible is the goal.
Beauty experts would tell you to experiment with under eye concealers until you decide on a great one. Purchase two shades, and then see which one is best for concealing your raccoon eyes.
Generally speaking, there are some rules to adhere to, and this one, according to Paulas Choice, is essential:
“….Select a shade of concealer that’s no more than one or two shades lighter than your natural skin tone to avoid an obvious white circle around the eye area.”
Paula’s Choice recommends carefully looking at the shade of concealer you are buying. In other words, stay away from those shades that appear “noticeably pink, rose, peach, white, yellow, or copper,” because they will show through your foundation.
Women of color also have challenges choosing the ideal under eye concealer, because the wrong one can make their complexion look ashy. XOVain advises working with your skin’s undertone. For example, if you’re a yellow undertone, choose a more golden concealer hue, and if you’re a red undertone, you should go for something more orange-based in concealers.
To find your proper undertone, use your inner wrist. Test a swipe of concealer there to see if the yellow or red blends in with your skin.
How Do You Use a Concealer To Cover Dark Circles Without Foundation?
Some women just don’t feel like wearing foundation all the time but would still like to make those under eye dark circles disappear instantly. You can use concealer without a foundation and still achieve your beauty goals.
The key here is to match the concealer as close as you can to your natural complexion. Some women like to mix a little primer with their concealer, and then dab it lightly around the eye area.
The primer/concealer is a great tip because primer keeps everything there without sliding off the face. In addition, the combination of the two looks more natural and not cakey.
Other beauty experts prefer a creamy concealer that is light in texture. Freelance makeup artist Monica Molin recommends wearing a concealer without foundation if you stick to her rule:
Make sure you go “a half to a full shade lighter than your skin tone.” If you use the same concealer shade as the rest of your face, it won’t deliver the necessary brightening effect to hide your dark circles.
There are also wonderful makeup tools to use when applying your concealer, says beauty YouTube star WayneGoss. He should know; the famous British makeup artist has more than 2.8 million subscribers. He shows you five different ways to apply concealer properly, without the dreaded “caking, creasing or mash like effects!”
Wayne Goss is fun, knowledgeable and tries out all his beauty tips on himself. Women shouldn’t fear concealer because it’s the best thing going for our challenging dark circles.
Our Final Product Recommendations
IT Bye Bye Under Eye Waterproof Concealer
This concealer from IT Cosmetics works really well for covering under eye dark circles. It’s waterproof and long lasting (lasts 12 hours or more). The concealer blends really well and goes on very smoothly. It contains great skin care ingredients like hyaluronic acid, antioxidants, and vitamins. It doesn’t crease or crack and it works great as a full coverage concealer.
One thing that I find odd about this concealer is that it is very thick. I guess it’s the reason for the good coverage but if you are not careful, you end up with a lot of it under your eyes and spending more time trying to spread it out. Some of my clients who have used this concealer told me that it does crease into fine lines. However, I’ve found that the concealer works best with a light dust of powder. I’ve not had any issues with it creasing.
Overall, this is my top pick for under eye concealers and it works really well to cover up dark spots.
Jerome Alexander CoverAge Concealer – Under Eye Makeup
This concealer is actually a 5 in 1 product. It works as a concealer, moisturizer, color corrector, skin toner and tightener. It contains important skin care ingredients like natural shea butter, hyaluronic acid and algae extract which helps to restore, hydrate and repair your skin. This concealer is one of the best for hydration and it blends really well too. It also works on sensitive skin and rosacea.
The cool thing about this concealer is that it comes with a roller. The roller is used to roll on your eye bags. At first, I didn’t know if this feature would be useful at all. However, after trying it out I must say its pretty cool. The roller has a cooling effect which makes your eyes feel fresh and relaxed.
The thing that I didn’t like about this concealer is that the coverage is too sheer. It’s for light cover-ups and definitely doesn’t work well for full coverage applications. Furthermore, if the weather is humid, the concealer gets a bit greasy.
However, it’s still a great concealer and something that I would recommend to the readers of this blog. It’s a great tool for quick cover ups and you get 5 tools for the price of 1. It’s a great bargain!
