How Your Pillowcase Could Be Affecting Your Body

We spend at least a third of our lives sleeping, and this time is, by all means, valuable to us. Without sleep, our bodies and minds could never recover from everyday stress and exhaustion. The term “beauty sleep” comes from the fact that our skin and hair also suffer from the lack of sleep, but too much of a good thing can be bad, as well. If you haven’t changed your pillowcase lately, you might want to consider doing so after reading some of the ways how it can make your beauty sleep worthless.

You’re Sleeping in Dust and Debris

There are some common mistakes people make when it comes to pillowcases. For one thing, they leave them exposed to dust during the day, and most materials welcome dust with hands wide open. Accumulated dust in your pillow is easily transferred to your face, which means you’ll wake up with a dirtier face than you went to bed with. Dirty pillowcases cause problems to your hair, as well. Your freshly washed and conditioned hair won’t be able to keep the dust particles away, so dirty pillows will force you to wash it more often than necessary. How to prevent this? Simply wash your pillowcase with soap and water every three or four days, and every month or so, try washing the whole pillow in order to get rid of the debris from deep within.

Irritation and Pimples Occur more Often

girl-on-bed-sleepingIt’s easy to spot that your pillow is full of bacteria when you start getting pimples (especially if you’re not in your PMS) or odd rashes on your face that haven’t appeared before. In most cases, simply washing your pillowcase will do the trick, and you will see all irritations disappearing within a couple of days. If this doesn’t happen, make sure to make an appointment with a dermatologist. Some laundry products might be irritating your skin, too, so keep this in mind if you’ve recently changed your regular chemicals. The choice of fabric is also important, with synthetic fabrics being the ones you should avoid. Silk is probably the best material for a pillowcase, but natural materials such as cotton, buckwheat or kapok will also work well. 

Drying out Your Skin

Think of your pillowcase as a tissue that sucks in all moisture. When you face touches the cloth, it’s almost impossible for the material not to absorb the moisture from your skin and eventually dry it out. Obviously, the more time you spend sleeping without hydration, the more dried out your face will be. In order to prevent this, you must think of a skin care routine that will prevent your skin from dehydrating through the night. It’s important to choose proper skin care products that will help you clean the pores before going to bed, such as blackhead removers and face rollers. Furthermore, when applying moisturizers, be sure to wait for at least twenty minutes for the skin to absorb the products completely, or all your effort will be made useless with your moisturizer being absorbed by the pillowcase.

Making a Mess of Your Hair

This one is especially important for restless sleepers. Turning from one side of the pillow to the other many times during the night is probably going to leave you with a bundle of knotted locks in the morning. Your regular hair routine could last half as long if you simply try avoiding one thing – going to sleep with wet hair. Pillowcases are made from strains that easily catch onto a string of hair, and wet ones are even easier to catch, making the process of knotting even worse. You can try avoiding this by getting silk or satin pillowcases, but it won’t help much if you don’t merely go once through your hair with a brush before going to bed. It worked for me on many occasions, and saved me a lot of hairdo time in the morning. 

Making You Age More Quickly 

No good news for stomach sleepers here. Some studies have shown that sleeping on the stomach can cause you to age more quickly. When you spend a lot of time in one position with your face pressured by the pillowcase, the development of sleep wrinkles is inevitable. However, there are some hacks you can lean on to help you avoid premature aging. There are specialized sleep wrinkle pillows designed not to place much pressure on your face, and there are also the already mentioned silk pillowcases, definitely my own favorite choice. You can also try looking for pillows which are anatomically designed to keep your head up and prevent you from turning on your stomach. 

Keep in mind that you can’t avoid having dark eye circles or under-eye bags if you simply don’t sleep enough. There’s no pillowcase that could help your beauty routine if you’re dead tired, so make sure you get a good night’s sleep before blaming it all on the pillow.
