How To Create Bob Box Braids

It’s sometimes hard to put into words the exact steps needed to create box braids. That’s why, we created a video to show you exactly how to do it. Watch our step-by-step video below to see exactly how to create beautiful box braids.

Note that the dummy used in the video below doesn’t have enough “hair” for a full box braids look. If you want more volume, you will need to add your own braiding hair. Before getting started, here is what you will need: 1 parting and hair comb, 2 packs of braiding hair and 1 pair of scissors.

Bob Box Braids FAQ – What You Need To Know

Here are some common questions and answers about bob box braids that you should probably know before getting started with your braids:

How Many Packs of Hair Do You need for Bob Box Braids?

You will need around 2-3 packs of braiding hair for your braids. Generally, the more extras you have, the better.

How Long Do Bob Box Braids Last?

Bob box braids can last  4 to 6 weeks. It’s not recommended that you push past the 6 weeks mark due to hygiene issues. It’s also a good idea to take them out after a few weeks and give your hair a good wash.

Can You Get Your Bob Box Braids Wet?

If you need to go swimming or wash your hair, it’s OK to get your braids wet. You will need to spend extra time to dry your braids. I recommend pressing the braid against a towel and let the towel soak up as much water as possible. Then use a blow dryer to into areas between the braids.

Do Box Braids Make Your Hair Curly?

Yes! As a matter of fact, this is a good way to get wavy hair without curling iron. However, this is mostly a after-effect. The results will depend on how you braid your hair and I don’t recommend using this method if your main goal is to have curly hair.

Can Tight Box Braids Cause Itching?

Yes! If you pulled your hair too tight during the braiding process, the pulling might have damaged your hair follicles, causing your scalp to feel itchy.

How Do I Loosen The Box Braids without Taking It Out?

Use Warm water to loosen the braids. Warm water helps to open up the hair shaft which will help to make your hair more elastic.

Should I Wash My Hair Before Getting A Box Braid?

Yes, you want your hair to be as clean and oil free as possible before starting the braid. Properly washing and conditioning your hair before the braiding process can help your braid stay fresher and for a longer period of time.

Should My Hair Be Braided Wet or Dry?

Always braid your hair dry. Wet hair is too heavy to braid and you wouldn’t want any water trapped between your braids when it’s done. Water prevents you from getting a tight braid. You will also gain more control for your braids if you braid it dry.
